biofilm consists of a layer of bacteria, surrounded by a selfcreated layer of slime, which, in combination with organic and mineral contamination, is very difficult to remove. There are nicer things in horticulture than biofilm and blockages. In fact, both phenomena are potentially very dangerous for your crops. And just in case you weren’t aware of these facts: the drain heater and UV decontamination won’t solve the problem. It’s not until the change of crops, when you use bleach (sodium hypochlorite) and aquafortis (nitric acid) that the biofilm will finally dissolve. However, it will always come back too soon during your next crop and the aforementioned substances are better left on the shelf while plants are growing. The only remedy appears to be a substance like Reciclean, which seems to be the only thing to do. And, in fact, it is a remedy often used. It’s safe for the crops – as long as measurements are taken frequently and in all relevant places – and it is also fairly effective. The hydrogen peroxide solution with stabiliser will conquer biofilm and contamination; although, it is rather costly.

And it has to be admitted: after decades of transparent or white
greenhouses, it takes some getting used to. As you can see from the
photographs, it’s not just yellow. It’s bright yellow!
